Needs Focused Teaching
We started Needs Focused Teaching in 2003 with the aim of reducing the punitive discipline methods used in many schools.
The reality is that behaviour issues are a major problem with some students completely out of control. Despite this, we firmly believe that every child, no matter their behaviour, deserves to be treated with respect.
If you’re a teacher facing abhorrent behaviour day in, day out, you may feel the urge to click away after such a suggestion. That’s perfectly fine. We realise this approach isn’t for everyone.
If you rely on bribes, threats, and other quick fix control methods in an attempt to manage behaviour, you won’t agree with our suggestions.
However, if you value building positive relationships and believe in understanding children first and foremost - yes, even those who swear in your face and spit in the corridor - then we’ll get on well. We must remember that the most challenging young people are often products of the most challenging backgrounds.
